Short Biography
Karri Kuoppala (b. 1976, Helsinki, Finland) is a Helsinki based visual artist. Kuoppala studied Visual Communication in the Surrey Institute of Art and design in Great Britain, Bildende Kunst in HGKZ, Switzerland and received his MA in Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts in the Department of painting in 2008.
Kuoppala executes his works in various media. With video, painting and sculpture his installations are functioning as tools of investigating the physical space as metaphor for one's inner space. Coming from the Helsinki graffiti scene the politics of uses of space are not alien to Kuoppala. Although his works have personal departures they may derive from interviews to visual mixes of art historical and popular culture references.
Kuoppala has exhibited in Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (2004, 2006, 2008), Helsinki City Art Museum (2008), Helsinki, European Economic and Social Comittee, Brussels (2007), Living Art Museum, Reykjavik (2007), the 10th Istanbul Biennale (2007) and with Mobile Art Production (2009) in Stockholm.
